By now, I’m sure you all know that when it comes to car insurance in particular, it really does pay to shop around. But, did you know that even after you’ve given numerous insurance providers all your details and chosen the company with the best premium, there are still further savings to be made based on the information you tell them.

Of course, you’re unable to lie to say that you’ve got more driving experience than you really have. You also cannot make yourself any older or make yourself appear to live in a lower premium post code. But, there are things you can adjust on your policy which can result in some extremely significant savings.

The first one is the excess. The excess is the amount you’ll pay towards the claim from your own pocket should you have an accident or need to make a claim for whatever reason. The more excess you offer to pay, the lower your overall premium will become. This can be quite a significant month to month saving so in my view, always offer to pay as much excess as you can possibly afford.

The other thing that people miss is the annual mileage. Always stick at around the average of 12,000 miles per year, putting mileage in excess of this on your policy leads to increased policy costs.

Finally, you might be better off getting your car in someone elses name and placing you as a named driver. This can result in huge savings if you’re a young or inexperienced driver who is looking to drive a high power vehicle.
